Tuesday's MLB roundup

The Boston Red Sox became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, rallying on pinch-hitter Brock Holt's go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox improved the best record in baseball at 99-46 and assured themselves at least a spot in the AL wild-card game while reaching the postseason for the third straight year, tying a team record.

Boston ace Chris Sale (left shoulder) came off the disabled list and pitched one scoreless inning, striking out two and throwing 26 pitches. Ryan Brasier got the win with 1⅓ innings of hitless relief.

Los Angeles 1, Texas 0: Eight Angels pitchers combined on a two-hitter as host Los Angeles beat the Rangers. The Angels held the Rangers hitless through seven innings.

Cleveland 2, Tampa Bay 0: Edwin Encarnacion reached 30 homers for the seventh consecutive season as the Indians beat the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla. Yan Gomes also homered for the Indians and rookie Shane Bieber struck out a career-high 11 in 6⅔ innings, allowing three hits to get the win.

Oakland 3, Baltimore 2: Mike Fiers worked six solid innings to lead the Athletics past the host Orioles. Fiers, acquired from the Tigers on Aug. 6, is 5-0 in seven starts with the A's.

Houston 5, Detroit 4: Jose Altuve homered on the game's first pitch and the Astros hit two more homers in the first four innings to beat the host Tigers.

Chicago 3, Milwaukee 0: Jose Quintana pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and Victor Caratini drove in two runs as the host Cubs beat the Brewers to take a two-game lead over them in the NL Central.

Washington 3-7, Philadelphia 1-6 (second game 10): Spencer Kieboom hit his first major league home run, and Erick Fedde pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning as the visiting Nationals beat the Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader. They also won the second game on Juan Soto's solo home run in the 10th inning. Soto also hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

Atlanta 4, San Francisco 1: Mike Foltynewicz pitched a six-hitter to win for the first time in nearly a month, Charlie Culberson hit a two-run homer after entering as an injury replacement and the Braves sent the host Giants to a 10th straight defeat.

Cincinnati 3, Los Angeles 1: Former Dodgers prospects Brandon Dixon and Scott Schebler homered as the host Reds beat Los Angeles again.

Miami 5, New York 3: Jacob deGrom took his latest hard-luck loss, getting outpitched by Jose Urena as the Marlins beat the host Mets. DeGrom gave up only Lewis Brinson's two-run double in seven stellar innings as his ERA rose just a bit to 1.71, still an MLB best.

Arizona 6, Colorado 3: Ketel Marte knocked in five run to lead the Diamondbacks over the host Rockies.
