TIGERS UPDATE
Detroit is 41-62 and in fourth place in the division after a 5-1 loss in Toronto on Sunday. The Tigers lost three of four in Toronto to fall to 16-35 on the road this season. ... Miguel Cabrera, who is hitting .277, has 1,840 career RBI and needs five RBI to move past Carl Yastrzemski into 14th place on the all-time RBI list. ... RHP Matt Manning (shoulder), who hasn't pitched for the Tigers since April 16, is expected to be activated during this series after a rehab outing last week. ... RHP Wily Peralta (left hamstring strain) is expected to rejoin the team this week after a rehab assignment over the weekend. ... After this series, the Tigers and Twins have one series left this season — Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at Target Field.
TWINS UPDATE
The Twins, whose AL Central lead is down to one game, open a seven-game homestand that ends with four games vs. Toronto. They are 53-48 after concluding a seven-game road trip with a 3-2 loss vs. the Padres on Sunday. The Twins began the trip with two victories on Detroit but lost four of five at Milwaukee and San Diego and finished with a 10-12 record in July. ... The Twins are 8-5 against the Tigers this season, including 5-1 at Target Field. On the season, the Twins are 25-19 vs. AL Central teams and 27-22 at home. ... 3B Jose Miranda batted .353 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 20 games in July. ... Tim Beckham was the designated hitter Sunday — his first start in a major league game since Aug. 4, 2019, when he was with Seattle.
Gerrit Cole gave up his opt-out right on Monday and will remain with the New York Yankees under a contract that runs through 2028 rather than become a free agent.
