The Minnesota Department of Transportation will shut down portions of I-94 and I-35W in downtown Minneapolis Friday night through early Monday morning in conjunction with reconstruction of the Park and Portland Avenue bridges.

That could complicate getting to Target Field for this weekend's Twins-Baltimore Orioles games Friday through Sunday at Target Field and other events downtown. Be sure to leave extra time to get downtown.

Southbound I-35W will be closed from Hiawatha Avenue (Hwy. 55) and the I-94/35 split.

Northbound I-35W will be closed from the downtown exits over to Hwy. 280.

Eastbound I-94 will be closed from the I-35W/94 split and Hiawatha Avenue (Hwy. 55).

Westbound I-94 will be closed from Hwy. 280 over to the downtown Minneapolis exits.

All lane closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and last until 5 a.m. Monday.

During the freeway closures, MnDOT crews will be inspecting and repairing expansion joints, sealing cracks in the pavement, repairing signs, repainting lane markings, inspecting and repairing electrical systems, clearing and repairing drainage structures, fixing guard rails, sweeping roadways and picking up debris.

In addition to the freeway closures, the Park and Portland Avenue bridges remain closed as MnDOT rebuilds the bridges. They will be closed until August.

Additional lane and road closings are on tap for Wednesday and Thursday:

  • At 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 southbound I-35W between Highway 55 and Franklin Avenue will close.
    • At 10 p.m. Thursday, May 9 westbound I-94 between Highway 280 and Highway 65 will close.

All lanes will re-open by 5 a.m. on the following day
