Minnesota's Liz Roehrig finished the first day of heptathlon competition in second place and Hassan Mead earned All-America honors Friday at the NCAA track and field championships in Des Moines.

Roehrig earned 3,581 points, and trailed only Jacquelyn Johnson who leads with 3,606 points. The heptathlon continues today.
Mead, a freshman, finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a U record time of 13 minutes, 44.30 seconds.
Etc. • Matt Schnobrich of St. Paul earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic rowing team when he and his partner, Josh Inman, won the men's pair at the trials Thursday in West Windsor, N.J.
• The Wichita Wingnuts rallied for a 6-5 victory over the St. Paul Saints in Wichita, Kan.
