Freshman Taylor Uhl had a hat trick as the Gophers women's soccer team defeated South Dakota State 5-0 in its home opener on Sunday at Robbie Stadium.

Uhl, from Eden Prairie, scored in the seventh, 52nd and 63rd minutes for 11th three-goal game in school history. Nicole Baier and Josie Solie also scored for the Gophers (1-1).

Etc. • A night after losing in the medal round, the U.S. men's basketball team beat Romania 94-73 at the World University Games in China, and will play Germany for fifth place. Canada and Serbia will play for the gold. The Gophers' Trevor Mbakwe had eight rebounds.

Ole Sheldon hit a two-run homer and the Saints bullpen pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief in a 5-2 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Midway Stadium.
