The Vikings called Sean Mannion up from the practice squad the past two weeks to be their backup quarterback. To make sure they have Mannion available on Sunday at Seattle, the Vikings added him to their active roster Tuesday.
Vikings add Sean Mannion to active roster
The team cut running back Ameer Abdullah to make room for the quarterback.
NFL rules only allow a team to call a player up from the practice squad twice in a season without adding him to the active roster; the Vikings reached their call-up limit with Mannion after Sunday's game in Arizona. Tuesday's move, then, was widely expected with the quarterback, who is still functioning as Kirk Cousins' backup on Sundays with third-round pick Kellen Mond still developing.
To make room for Mannion on the roster, the Vikings released running back Ameer Abdullah, who had been signed to the active roster from the practice squad before the Week 2 loss at Arizona. The Vikings could decide to bring him back to the practice squad again, though the veteran is free to sign with another team immediately.
Andrew Krammer is joined by Matthew Coller of Purple Insider to discuss the Vikings offense, what they think of Justin Fields and the Bears, and they talk what's been expected and unexpected through four games.
