Wednesday's college basketball highlights

No. 1 Wake loses its first • VIRGINIA TECH 78, No. 1 WAKE FOREST 71: Malcolm Delaney scored 21 points and the Hokies (12-6, 3-1 ACC) held on to upset the previously unbeaten Demon Deacons (16-1, 3-1) on Wednesday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Jeff Teague scored 23 points for Wake Forest, which was playing as the nation's top-ranked team for the first time since November 2004.

"You never want to lose, but I'm kind of glad we got it out the way," Teague said. "Everybody was trying to play perfect, and everybody didn't want to mess up and things like that, because they wanted to stay No. 1. But now we've got that out the way, we're just going to get back to doing what we were doing."

• No. 3 CONNECTICUT 89, No. 20 VILLANOVA 83: A.J. Price scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Huskies (17-1, 6-1 Big East) past the Wildcats (14-4, 2-3) in Hartford, Conn. UConn has won six in a row.

• No. 5 NORTH CAROLINA 94, No. 10 CLEMSON 70: Wayne Ellington had 25 points and the Tar Heels (17-2, 3-2 ACC) remained perfect in 54 home games against the Tigers (16-2, 2-2).

• No. 6 OKLAHOMA 72, NEBRASKA 61: Blake Griffin had 27 points and 18 rebounds, breaking a Big 12 record with his eighth game with at least 20 points and 15 rebounds, as the host Sooners (18-1, 4-0) beat the Cornhuskers (12-5, 2-2) to become the first team in the nation with 18 wins.

• No. 17 ARIZONA STATE 53, ARIZONA 47: James Harden scored 21 points and the Sun Devils (16-3, 5-2 Pac-10) beat the host Wildcats (11-8, 2-5) to win consecutive games at McKale Center for the first time in 25 years.

• Idris Hilliard tapped in a missed shot at the buzzer to give St. Joseph's (10-7, 4-0 Atlantic 10) a 99-98 overtime win over Duquesne (12-6, 3-2) in Philadelphia.

• Marcus Thornton scored 31 points as LSU (15-3, 3-1) extended its home-court winning streak to 17 games with an 81-57 victory against Mississippi State (13-6, 3-1).

• Ali Farokhmanesh scored 17 points and host Northern Iowa (13-6, 7-1) rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat Bradley (11-8, 5-3) 66-61 to maintain its lead in the Missouri Valley Conference.

• Stephen Curry, the nation's leading scorer at 29.1 points per game, scored 30 points and Davidson remained undefeated in the Southern Conference by beating Furman 83-43.

• New Jersey Institute of Technology ended its 51-game losing streak with a 61-51 victory over Bryant in Newark, N.J. The Highlanders are in their third year of NCAA Division I competition.

• CARLETON 72, GUSTAVUS 67: Zach Johnson had 28 points, five assists and four rebounds to lead the host Knights (11-4, 7-3) past the Gusties (8-7, 7-3).

• CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD 74, ST. THOMAS 64: The host Cobbers (11-4, 10-2), who have won nine of their last 10 games, sank 31 of 36 free throws in beating the Tommies (9-6, 7-5) to remain in a tie for first place with St. Benedict in the MIAC.

• ST. BENEDICT 75, BETHEL 62: The visiting Blazers (12-3, 10-2) overcame a 16-point deficit to beat the Royals (7-8, 6-6).

• North Carolina State women's coach Kay Yow is continuing her cancer treatments at an undisclosed hospital.

• Alabama guard Ronald Steele, who seemed to be returning to the form that made him a preseason All-America two years ago, has decided to skip the rest of his senior season after sustaining a foot injury.
