California will get another shot at UCLA • CALIFORNIA 84, WASHINGTON 81: Patrick Christopher scored 25 points and Ryan Anderson had 22 points and 16 rebounds as the Golden Bears rallied for a first-round victory over the Huskies on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

The ninth-seeded Bears (16-14) and top-seeded Bruins (28-3) will meet in a second-round game today -- five days after UCLA won a controversial 81-80 decision in the regular-season finale.

Jerome Randle added 14 points for the Bears, who ended a five-game losing streak.

Quincy Pondexter led eighth-seeded Washington (16-16) with 23 points and nine rebounds.

Washington star Jon Brockman, averaging a team-leading 17.6 points and a conference-leading 11.5 rebounds, missed his first game of the season because of a sprained left ankle.

Marquette advances • MARQUETTE 67, SETON HALL 54: Jerel McNeal scored 21 points, and the Golden Eagles held the Pirates scoreless over the final five minutes of their first-round game in New York. Sixth-seeded Marquette (23-8) will play third-seeded Notre Dame tonight.

• WEST VIRGINIA 58, PROVIDENCE 53: Joe Alexander scored 22 points and the Mountaineers (23-9) held the Friars to two baskets over the final seven minutes. Fifth-seeded West Virginia today will face fourth-seeded and 15th-ranked Connecticut.

• PITTSBURGH 70, CINCINNATI 64: Sam Young scored 21 points, matching Cincinnati guard Deonta Vaughn nearly shot for shot, and the Panthers held on to beat the Bearcats. Ronald Ramon, who grew up in the Bronx, hit four three-pointers and finished with 12 points for seventh-seeded Pittsburgh (23-9), which advanced to play second-seeded Louisville today. Keith Benjamin, who grew up just north of the city, added 15 points, and Brooklyn's Levance Fields had 10.

Lawson likely to start North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson will make his first start since Feb. 3 in Friday's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament quarterfinals in Charlotte, N.C., as long as he gets through today's practice in good health. Lawson returned from a sprained left ankle March 1 but played a reserve role behind Quentin Thomas in the Tar Heels' past three games. Lawson missed six games with the injury.

• UTEP 71, SMU 49: Randy Culpepper scored 25 points, matching a UTEP record of seven three-pointers, to lead the Miners to an opening-round victory in Memphis.

• TULSA 66, EAST CAROLINA 49: Seven-footer Jerome Jordan had 18 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks in the Golden Hurricane's opening-round victory.

• TULANE 48, MARSHALL 47: Kevin Sims scored 14 points, including the winning free throws with 6.4 seconds left, as the Green Wave rallied from 10 behind.

• SOUTHERN MISS 59, RICE 50: Jeremy Wise scored 23 points for the Golden Eagles. The Owls finished the season with a record of 3-27.

• ST. JOSEPH'S 80, FORDHAM 62: Pat Calathes had 23 points and seven rebounds and the Hawks (19-11) used a 21-3 first-half run to break the game open in Atlantic City. Tasheed Carr shot 7-for-7 and had 16 points and seven assists for St. Joseph's.

• DAYTON 63, ST. LOUIS 62: Marcus Johnson scored eight of his 16 points in overtime and hit the game winning shot with 32 seconds left as the Flyers held off the Billikens in the first round.

• LASALLE 82, DUQUESNE 79: Rodney Green hit a go-ahead free throw with 23.8 seconds to play as the Explorers rallied from a late seven-point deficit.

• CHARLOTTE 75, RHODE ISLAND 73: Michael Gerrity hit two free throws after a questionable foul call with less than a second to play as the 49ers rallied from a late five-point deficit.

• COLORADO STATE 68, WYOMING 63: Marcus Walker scored 22 points as the Rams -- 0-16 during the conference season -- upset the Cowboys in a play-in game in Las Vegas.

• UC IRVINE 77, LONG BEACH STATE 63: The 49ers bowed out in the first round in Anaheim, Calif., ending their season at 6-25 under former Gophers coach Dan Monson.

• MOUNT ST. MARY'S 68, SACRED HEART 55: Jean Cajou and Kelly Beidler each scored 15 points, and the Mountaineers earned a trip to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1999 with a victory in Fairfield, Conn. Mount St. Mary's students held up signs urging their team to "Win for Dustin," and began chanting "Dustin Bauer" as the game wound down. Bauer, a senior at the school, was placed on life support after injuring his head in a fall from the first-floor landing of a residence hall early Sunday.

Miami (Ohio) coach Charlie Coles is in the hospital following an unspecified heart procedure. Coles, 66, stepped away from coaching earlier this month because of stomach pains and had undergone tests.

Rodney Tention resigned as Loyola Marymount coach after three losing seasons. The Lions finished 5-26 overall and eighth in the West Coast Conference with a 2-12 record this season.
