Oregon tailback LaMichael James, one of the top freshmen in the nation, was arrested on domestic violence charges after his girlfriend said he grabbed her neck during an argument and pushed her to the ground.

James, 20, was in the Lane County Jail on Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of menacing, strangulation and assault.

James began the season as the backup to LeGarrette Blount but quickly became a star after Blount was suspended for most of the season for punching a Boise State player immediately after the Ducks' season opener. The 5-9, 180-pound James rushed for 1,546 yards, the ninth-highest total in the nation and the most ever by a Pacific-10 Conference freshman.

• Miami (Fla.) quarterback Jacory Harris will miss the Hurricanes' spring practice because of an injury to his throwing hand.

• Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh is adding two more former NFL assistants to his coaching staff. Former Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner will be his new quarterbacks and wide receivers coach and former Vikings assistant Derek Mason will coach defensive backs.

BASEBALL

Dentist 2, Greinke 0 Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke missed his first scheduled bullpen session Wednesday for the Kansas City Royals because he had to get two teeth pulled.

Greinke left camp with puffiness in his right jaw after he said he had a wisdom tooth and a broken tooth extracted.

Greinke said he would play catch Thursday and, if all goes well, resume throwing off the mound Friday. Greinke went 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA last season and has been named the Royals' Opening Day starter.

Cliff Lee arrived at the Mariners' spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., but it likely will be another week or more before he can pitch. Lee has a bandage around his left foot following Feb. 5 surgery to remove a bone spur.

• Pitcher Wandy Rodriguez has gone to a salary arbitration hearing against the Astros, asking to be paid $7 million this year instead of the team's $5 million offer. The 31-year-old lefthander was 14-12 last season with a 3.02 ERA.

• An MRI on Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens' right shoulder revealed inflammation but no structural problems. Jurrjens, who was 14-10 and ranked third in the NL with a 2.60 ERA last season, is expected to start throwing next week.

• Former major league pitcher Jim Bibby, who pitched for four major league clubs from 1972 to 1984, died Tuesday in Lynchburg, Va. He was 65. Bibby pitched the first no-hitter in Rangers history, beating Oakland 6-0 in 1973, and was a member of the Pirates team that won the 1979 World Series.

NFL

Veteran punter Hentrich retires Punter Craig Hentrich announced his retirement Wednesday after 17 NFL seasons, saying he'd had a good career.

Hentrich, 38, spent the past 12 seasons with the Tennessee Titans and was with Green Bay before that. For his career, he averaged 42.9 yards per punt on 1,150 attempts.

• The Browns released running back Jamal Lewis. Lewis' season ended Dec. 2 when he was placed on injured reserve with postconcussion symptoms.

• The Ravens said they signed wide receiver Donte' Stallworth to a one-year contract. Stallworth was recently released by the Browns after being reinstated by the NFL following a one-year suspension. He was suspended for violating the league's personal-conduct policy for a drunken-driving vehicular manslaughter charge.

AROUND THE HORN

Running: The Daily Nation newspaper reported that former 10,000-meter world champion Moses Tanui was injured and former world championship runner David Lelei killed in an auto accident near Nairobi, Kenya.

Auto racing: Matt Kenseth has a crew chief change only one week into the NASCAR season. Todd Parrott will replace Drew Blickensderfer atop the No. 17 Ford pit box this weekend.

Tennis: United States Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe selected John Isner, Sam Querrey and the doubles pairing of twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan to the team that will play against Serbia on March 5-7. For the first time since 2000, neither Andy Roddick nor James Blake will be on the roster.
