What is Retribution Gospel hiding away?

RGC's ominous new video accompanies Sub Pop's release of '2.'

We're taking any and all theories on what exactly the members of Retribution Gospel Choir are hiding away in their new video for "Hide it Away," featuring an Ahab-muttonchopped Alan Sparhawk, some ominous Lake Superior scenery and a mysterious box reminiscent of "Lost" or the "Pulp Fiction" briefcase. We're also a little disturbed by the fact that three dudes dressed all in black can spend the afternoon digging a grave-sized hole on shore near Superior, and nobody alerted the authorities.

RGC's Sub Pop disc, "2," came out last week and is still my favorite record of 2010 so far. The album hasn't gotten a whole lot of attention from myself and other local media outlets (including Radio K and the Current, each of which have RGC in-studios on the books), but that's because we're waiting till closer to the Duluth trio's tour finale at the Triple Rock on Feb. 20. "Hide It Away" is the opening track and a good example of the hell-fiery Neil Young-ish guitarwork and haunted vocals heard throughout. Pitchfork already gave it some love.
