Spurs update: San Antonio, the five-time NBA champion that has missed the playoffs in five consecutive seasons and hasn’t won a playoff series since 2017, is 2-3 after beating Utah 106-88 on Thursday night as 7-foot-2 C Victor Wembanyama, the 20-year-old who was last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year, had 25 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. G Tre Jones (ankle), the former Apple Valley standout, and G Devin Vassell (foot) are out. The Spurs only won 22 games last season, but one of those came against the Timberwolves in San Antonio, a 113-112 victory on Jan. 27 when the Spurs outscored the Wolves 33-22 in the fourth quarter, with Keldon Johnson making a go-ahead free throw with 9 seconds left.
Wolves update: They played Denver on Friday night at Target Center after starting the season 2-2, their second consecutive home game against a team they faced in the playoffs last season.
Their 28-point lead got trimmed to two late, but they held on in a Western Conference finals rematch that missed an injured Luka Doncic after halftime.
