A woman running to catch a bus was hit by a minivan and badly hurt Sunday near a busy south Minneapolis intersection.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. near E. Lake Street and Cedar Avenue, said police spokesman John Elder.

The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center, said Elder. She was in critical condition late Sunday.

Cereena Stewart-Spry, on the Metro Transit bus that was stopped near Cedar Avenue on eastbound Lake Street, said the woman was crossing the 2900 block of Cedar in the middle of the street "trying to catch this [bus]" when the northbound van "hit the lady."

The witness said the woman "flew up in the air almost as high as the bus and hit her face on the ground."

Elder said the van's driver stopped immediately and rendered aid until emergency personnel arrived.
