Everyone takes off their clothes though rarely with the vintage verve of Nadine Dubois and the cast of Lili's Burlesque Revue.

Dubois founded the troupe with seven other core members in 2004, and she and her Lili's cohorts continue to do their homework. That includes yearly pilgrimages to the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas to learn trade secrets from legendary performers.

"There's an energy that comes with the slow reveal of a piece of clothing," Dubois said. "And not everybody is good at doing it that way, just like any other art."

Serving as emcee, singing and doing an occasional striptease routine, Dubois hosts Lili's shows and hundreds if not thousands of burlesque revues around the country.

A former Gustavus Adolphus student with a music and theater background, Dubois had tried acting and singing in rock bands before finding the right creative outlet in burlesque.

Dubois helps run the business side of Lili's with her fellow performers, while working in the service industry, studying floristry and being a step-mother.

On stage, Dubois often shares the story of performing for the first time before her "conservative, Republican, Lutheran parents from South Dakota" in a routine that included a pasty-twirling crescendo.

"They had a wonderful time," Dubois said. "They were a little shocked but very supportive."

Three and out with Nadine Dubois

  • What makes burlesque so much different from a strip club?

We feature live music, variety acts like juggling, fire-eating, contortionism and bull-whip artistry and classic striptease. There will be people on stage taking their clothes off but we're selling the sizzle and not the steak.

    • What drew you to burlesque?

When I met these people that are now still part of Lili's and we started doing this vintage entertainment, I felt like I had found my family and I felt like I had found my home. I wasn't expecting to find it there but I did.

      • What happens if or when a "wardrobe malfunction" occurs?

You quick cover with a hat or a boa or a glove or your hand or turn to the side or whatever. Back in the day when we used latex to keep our pasties on, a little bit of heat or a little bit of sweat and you'd have a pasty come off.

Three more and out with Dubois

        • What goes into creating the vintage feel of burlesque?

We look to the past for inspiration and we do our homework. Every year we go to the burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. We take that old-time feel and apply our own talents to it.

          • What misconceptions do burlesque performers face?

There might be a misconception that we are objectifying ourselves, that we might be powerless or that we're using sex to sell something. The first thing I tell people to do is to see a show. The second thing I tell people is that I'm a feminist and I am in control of my choices and this is something that makes me happy.

            • How different are you off stage from your on-stage character?

Frankly, it's not any different who I am in real life. Nadine probably drinks a little more whiskey and swears a little more. But all in all Nadine is the person who I always dreamed of being.
