11-year-old girl struck, killed while bicycling in her Carlton County hometown

An off-duty police officer worked to save her, but she died after being airlifted to a hospital. The driver was unimpaired and cooperative, police said.

An 11-year-old Wrenshall, Minn., girl was fatally struck by a pickup truck early Friday evening.

Avery Anderson was riding her bicycle on Broadway Street near Crestwood Drive when she was hit by a vehicle driven by a 49-year-old man from Summerville, S.C. Carlton County deputies found no sign of impairment and he was cooperative at the scene, according to a news release.

An off-duty Cloquet police officer was at the scene and began lifesaving efforts. Anderson was taken by Life Link III to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where she later died.
