A man from Brooklyn Center and a woman from Mounds View died in a crash late Monday involving a vehicle going the wrong way on Interstate 694 in Fridley.

The State Patrol identified the victims as Julian Griffin, 46, and Mary Louise Ruegsegger, 78.

Griffin, the patrol said, got on the ramp from University Avenue to eastbound I-694 at about 9:50 p.m. At the top of the ramp, he turned and began driving west in the eastbound lanes.

Ruegsegger was headed east on I-694 and the two vehicles collided head-on, the patrol said.

Both drivers, who were wearing seat belts, were pronounced dead at the scene. It was not immediately known if alcohol was a factor, the patrol said.

The eastbound lanes of I-694 were closed for several hours as authorities investigated and cleaned up the wreckage.
