A Big Lake man died Wednesday morning when his pickup rear-ended a snowplow in Big Lake Township, according to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office.

Ross B. Ness, 37, was killed about 8:50 a.m., Sheriff Joel Brott said in a news release. Ness was southbound on NW. 196th Street when he struck the back of the southbound plow, which had just pushed snow onto the southwest corner of the intersection and was backing up to turn onto 212th Avenue.

When it was struck, the plow was stationary as its driver lowered the plow wing. According to Brott, the driver saw the pickup approaching quickly behind him and tried to turn onto 212th to avoid a crash but could not do so in time.

The plow's warning lights were illuminated, Brott said.

The plow's driver, Michael R. Leverty, 43, of Zimmerman, was not hurt.
