Cameo critic: Nellie McKay on Wanda Sykes

April 5, 2008 at 10:33PM

Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay is very, very funny. She brings a biting, Randy Newman-evoking wit to her songs. McKay, who performs tonight through Tuesday at the Dakota Jazz Club, actually worked as a standup comedian before taking up a music career. So it's not surprising that she digs comedians and sings the praises of Wanda Sykes' HBO special "Sick and Tired," which is available on DVD.

"She's good on animals, she's good on women, she's good on the war, she's just funny. She's on it. She's real fresh, not in the sassy sense. It's topical and it's humorous."
