The most memorable moment of senior Porter Morrell's basketball career came just a week ago when Elk River beat Osseo by one point in the Northwest Suburban conference. The Elks held Osseo to just 46 points on senior night.
"[Junior forward] Clay Elrod hit the game-winning three with one second left," Morrell said. "That's something I'm never going to forget. That's the best game I've ever been a part of so far in my life."
Fans storming the court after the game made the night even more unforgettable. The captain said the feeling was just as euphoric as the Gophers upsetting then-No. 1 Indiana last week.
"There was a few less people, though," Morrell said.
Elk River is seeded No. 2 in the Section 8 Class 4A tournament after tying for third in its conference. Morrell said he is hoping for an even more memorable moment to end his senior season — a trip to the state tournament.
What were your team's goals this season? We wanted to keep teams under 50 points. We wanted to take… top-three in the conference and we wanted to win our section.
How do you feel about your section chances? It's nice to have a home game. We for sure wanted to be one of the top-four spots for a home game. That was one of our goals. But then after that, you know, you have to beat everybody to win your section… We feel pretty confident.
Are you the offensive leader with 17.4 points per game 5.2 and assists per game? I have the ball the most as the point guard. I'm kind of in control. My job is to kind of get us into sets… and to control the pace and make sure that we're running our offense. And then it's also at times, I have to score.
