The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners adopted a plan Tuesday to fight climate change.
The Climate Action Plan outlines how the county can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the most vulnerable from climate change, according to a Hennepin County news release. About 2,300 residents, 80 public entity partners, 57 staff and "many" community organizations were part of the planning.
"It is a promise to residents that we are committed to aligning our policies, budget and capital investments with the ambitious goals and innovative strategies outlined in this plan," Commissioner Chris LaTondresse said in the release. "We need an urgent paradigm shift in how we address climate change in order to create a better future for all."
Hennepin County also recently committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and created a new director position who will be responsible for the operation of the new plan.
The plan's goals include transitioning to renewable energy sources and reduction of energy use, preventing food waste, building and maintaining a green infrastructure, designing in anticipation of future climate conditions and cutting greenhouse gases.
