Before taking your dog out on the town, consider its behavior. Your dog should be able to sit and stay quietly for at least an hour, so it won't be disruptive during a meal or activity. It should have good recall ability (in case it gets off its leash) and should be friendly toward strangers, children and other dogs. Bring along these items to ensure the best behavior:

• A portable water dish.
• Poop bags.
• A favorite toy or bone.
• A squirt gun to quiet your dog in case any barking gets out of hand.
