Portland Avenue in downtown Minneapolis closing for construction
The first of several construction projects in downtown Minneapolis slated for this year kicks off at 9 a.m. Monday when a two-block segment of Portland Avenue closes.
The "Road Closed" signs will go up at 9 a.m. as the street will be closed between 3rd and 5th Streets. The closure will last through mid-May.
The official detour: 3rd Street to 4th Avenue and then to 6th Street.
Also closed will be 5th Street between Chicago Avenue and 5th Avenue S.
It's all because crews will begin working on the new Downtown Commons, a two-block, public green space being created in the Downtown East neighborhood.
In the coming weeks, the City of Minneapolis will begin making pedestrian and bike improvements to the adjacent parts of Portland Avenue, Park Avenue, and 4th and 5th Streets.
These include off-street bike lanes, pedestrian bump outs at intersections and new sidewalks and pedestrian-level street lighting.
The proposal suggests removing the 20-year protection on the Superior National Forest that President Joe Biden’s administration had ordered in 2023.
