Guidelines of new transgender policy

Here are three of the criteria for determining eligibility for a transgender female to participate in high school sports, according to the Minnesota State High School League:

• Written statement from the student and parents or guardians affirming gender identity.

• Statements from parents, teachers and/or friends about the student's actions, attitudes, dress and manner.

• Written statement from "an appropriate health-care professional'' verifying the student's gender identity.

Note: State law already permits girls to participate in boys' sports. The new policy goes into effect for the 2015-16 school year. See the full transcript of what the board approved at startribune.com.
