Trophy Tales: A happy first day at the cabin
Micah Schmidt, 9, Dellwood • 16-inch smallmouth bass • Lake Vermilion
It was early in the morning on Micah's first day at his grandparent's cabin on Lake Vermilion and he was fishing alone with a leech. When he caught this bass, above, he had to bring it in and also lift the fish onto the dock without a net, by himself. "When I was reeling it in, I thought it was a northern because it fought so hard,'' he said. "I was so relieved to get it in because I thought it might spit the hook out."
A FIGHTER
Tom Gleason of Hanover, Minn., caught this 18-inch largemouth bass while he was fishing for crappies on Little Pine Lake near Crosslake. "This baby attacked my minnow and put up the fight of the summer,'' he said.
FIRST FISH
Katie Frehner, 22, of Roseville, reeled in this 15-inch walleye on a BWCA lake while jigging at dusk from her canoe. It was her first experience landing, unhooking and releasing a fish on her own.
