U.S. Gymnastics Championships: What you need to know
When: Thursday-Sunday
Where: Dickies Arena, Fort Worth, Texas
The schedule: The men will compete Thursday and Saturday (junior division 1 p.m., senior division 6:30 p.m.) The women's competition is Friday (juniors 1 p.m., seniors 6:30 p.m.) and Sunday (juniors noon, seniors 5:30 p.m.).
TV: Thursday, Olympic Channel, 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, NBCSN, 7 p.m.; Sunday, Ch. 11, 6 p.m.
What's at stake: The meet will determine U.S. all-around and event champions at the junior and senior levels. It's also the final chance for athletes to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials June 24-27 in St. Louis.
Minnesota connections: Three top candidates for the U.S. Olympic team — Suni Lee (St. Paul), Grace McCallum (Isanti) and Shane Wiskus (Spring Park/Gophers) — will pursue national titles as they prepare for the Olympic trials. Wiskus is the defending U.S. champion on vault, and Lee is the reigning champ on uneven bars. Lee and McCallum finished second and third behind Simone Biles in the all-around at the last U.S. championships in 2019.
Two other former Gophers — Mike Moran and Crew Bold — will compete in the men's senior division. In the women's senior division, Lee will be joined by two club teammates from Midwest Gymnastics Center: Lyden Saltness of Chisago City and Ciena Alipio of San Jose, Calif.
