What's new with school nutrition rules

Sodium limits

The rule: Elementary school lunches now limit sodium to less than 1,230 mg; it would have been lowered to 935 mg on July 1. The middle-school limit, now 1,360 mg, would have fallen to 1,035 mg. The high school limit, now 1,420 mg, would have dropped to 1,080 mg.

What's new: Implementation of the lower standard has been postponed for 3 years.

Whole-grain-rich products

The rule: Increase whole-grain-rich products from 50 percent to 100 percent in school year 2014-15.

What's new: Schools will continue to be able to apply for waivers exempting them from this mandate.

Milk requirements

The rule: Offer only milk that is fat-free (unflavored and flavored) and low-fat (unflavored only).

What's new: 1 percent flavored milk can be served.

Other restrictions

The rules: Students must select at least a half-cup of fruits or vegetables at lunch; lunches may not include trans fat and must contain reduced amounts of saturated fat.

What's new: Unchanged.
