When will the money arrive? The IRS started making direct deposits on Monday and will start mailing rebate checks May 9. The process should take about 10 weeks.

Who is eligible? Single tax filers with adjusted gross income of less than $75,000 and couples with less than $150,000. All told, rebate checks will go to about 117 million middle- and low-income taxpayers, as well as 20 million seniors on Social Security and 250,000 disabled veterans.

How big is the check? Singles can get rebates of up to $600. Couples will get rebates of up to $1,200 plus $300 per dependent child. Those who exceed the maximum will have their rebates reduced by 5 percent of the amount over the cap. Singles with income over $87,000 and couples making more than $174,000 don't qualify.

How do I collect? File your taxes, even if you're a retiree or disabled veteran who normally doesn't file them. Those who missed the April 15 deadline or requested an extension might have to wait until December.
