Summer day trips are incomplete without pie. Karna Hudoba usually bakes at least 20 varieties (those flaky crusts are powered with lard) at her Aroma Pie Shoppe (618 Main St., Whalan, Minn., 507-467-2623).

The Stockholm Pie Co. (N2030 Spring St., Stockholm, Wis., 715-442-5505, stockholmpieandgeneralstore.com) prepares a similarly large number of tempting variations.

And Sandra Thielman's towering banana cream pies — and over-the-top, berry-packed pies — are a sight to behold at the Smiling Pelican Bakeshop (W3556 State Hwy. 35, Maiden Rock, Wis., 715-448-3807).
