WIENER DOG RACES

Dachshunds will run as fast as their short legs can carry them in the "Wiener Dog Warm Up." The winning canine will compete in the "Labor Day Wiener Dog Wars." Guests can munch on free hot dogs and even participate in a hot-dog eating contest. The event also includes pony rides, face painting and a petting zoo. (11:30 a.m. Sat. $8 for $18 and older. Canterbury Park, 1100 Canterbury Rd., Shakopee. 952-445-7223. www.canterburypark.com.)

FARMER'S FOURTH OF JULY

Early 19th-century Independence Day didn't quite have the hoopla it does in modern times. Take a low-key approach to the holiday by packing a lunch to enjoy on the lawn of the Oliver Kelley Farm. Take a horse-drawn trolley ride and play vintage games. (10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. $6-$9. Oliver Kelley Farm, 15788 Kelley Farm Rd., Elk River. 651-259-3000. www.mnhs.org.)
